This past week, Pensacola International Airport said goodbye to the former air traffic control tower and terminal radar approach control building, clearing the way for future expansion as the airport continues to see record-breaking numbers. Located on the north end of the terminal, the building that was for decades the work area of air traffic controllers, technicians, and support staff has now been demolished.

This structure was built in the 1960s and was designed to accommodate all the Federal Aviation Administration activity at the airport. Operations housed within included air traffic control tower, terminal radar approach control facility or TRACON, flight service station, communications equipment, and administrative spaces. In 1994, a new stand-alone tower was constructed to give controllers the ability to view the airfield without obstruction, which is still in use today. All other FAA activity remained at the north end location until 2007, when the new facility was completed next to the tower and operations at the old TRACON were closed. There have been discussions over the years about converting the structure into office space or other uses, but airport directors have always agreed the location would someday be required for the growth of the airport and the terminal.

“This marks a milestone that many airport directors before me would be excited to see happening,” said Airport Director Matthew Coughlin. “The demolition of this structure, along with other enabling projects, paves the way for future expansion outlined in our master plan.”

Pensacola International Airport’s master plan goes out 20 years and includes several projects that enable the addition of a new concourse. Some of these projects include removal of the old TRACON structure, additional parking facilities, redesign of curbside, and other airfield projects. Most recently, PNS completed the construction of an airside remain overnight aircraft ramp that will afford additional capacity to park commercial service aircraft.

“In order for us to achieve the expansions outlined in the master plan, we will need to complete the smaller enabling projects systematically,” said Assistant Director for Planning and Engineering Ken Ibold. “Our engineering and financial teams are working now to develop and set into motion that timeline.”

The smaller projects, also known as enabling projects, need to be completed to accommodate the larger projects like building a new concourse. Many are already underway or completed, and others are in the planning stages. Upon completion of the master plan, Pensacola International Airport will have approximately 22 gates with loading bridges and be able to accommodate larger aircraft and more passenger capacity.

This summer, Pensacola International Airport experienced exponential growth in passengers in comparison to 2019. This growth has accelerated expansion plans. According to the master plan, PNS will be able to add 10 new gates to the terminal in the next three to five years. This will support continued air service expansion and flight options for the Gulf Coast residents and visitors.

Signs of a busy summer season

We are just beginning the summer season and we are seeing great numbers, additional new flights, and much more on the horizon. So many around the country are looking at Pensacola and seeing what is special. When they come to visit they know what makes us a special place to live and to visit.

United Adds 4 destinations

United Airlines is adding 4 new destinations that we have never had at PNS; Cleveland (CLE), Milwaukee (MKE), Cincinnati (CVG), and Pittsburgh (PIT).

The added service will began May 27, 2021 and continues through September 2021. Flights will be operated by the CRJ-550 – the world’s first 50-seater aircraft with two cabins. The CRJ-550 is equipped with 10 first class seats, 20 economy plus seats, 20 standard economy seats, Wi-Fi, more legroom and enough overhead bin space for every customer to bring a roller bag onboard.

SPIRIT AIRLINES ADDS MORE GO TO THE PANHANDLE

We have been working on this addition for months and the time is finally here! Spirit Airlines is bringing Spirit Signature Service, brand new Airbus planes and industry-leading low fares to Pensacola International Airport (PNS) starting June 10. Spirit will offer the only nonstop flights to Columbus (CMH), Indianapolis (IND) and Louisville (SDF), along with nonstop service Austin (AUS), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Kansas City (MCI) and St. Louis (STL).

SOUTHWEST ADDS TO AN ALREADY ROBUST SCHEDULE

Southwest will add non stop flights to Austin (AUS), Baltimore (BWI), Denver (DEN), and Kansas City (MCI), bringing their flight offerings to 10 non stop destinations starting in June.

DELTA ADDS SERVICE TO NEW YORK

In Pensacola, Delta has remained synonymous with Atlanta (ATL).  Delta opens their service offered at the Gateway to the Gulf Coast with a non stop flight to New York’s LaGuardia Airport, located in the Queens borough of New York City. Delta will operate this flight between LGA and PNS on Saturdays only starting in June!

more people are choosing to travel

The past year has been rough for everyone and now that restrictions are being lifted and more vaccinations are being administered, people are beyond ready to travel. 2019 was a record breaking year for the airport with over 2.2 million passengers. Before the pandemic, we were looking at another record year. Currently, the airport is seeing an increase in passengers and it is an exciting time for the Pensacola area. Not only are we seeing pre-pandemic numbers, but compared to 2019, we are seeing a 10% increase in passengers when compared to the same week in 2019.

Just last week, we had a single day with 10,000 passengers, and an average of 8,500 passengers daily! These numbers come before all the additional flights mentioned above, business travel is still lower than in 2019, and international travel is not open like it was in 2019. All in all, like the Airport Director Matt Coughlin said “we are very busy.”

UPDATE: AND NOW THE BRIDGE IS OPEN!!

Here’s to a great summer here in Pensacola!

New Destinations and what to expect at the airport

The busy season for Pensacola is upon us and we are seeing the influx of visitors, travelers, vacationers, and the like to our airport. So what information do we have for our area partners about what is going on at the airport?

IT’S BUSY!

2019 was a banner year for the Pensacola International Airport with over 2.2 million passengers. That is an increase of 17% from 2018, which saw a 16% growth rate from the previous year. Double digit growth like that is not common in the air industry. In February of 2020, the airport was already 11% above from 2019’s numbers and we had not even started the spring/summer season.

So this year, we are comparing to 2019 for obvious reasons. Looking at the numbers on a rolling weekly average, Pensacola International Airport is currently 4-6% above the same time frame in 2019. This is a huge turnaround for our area despite a global pandemic, hurricane damage, no easy bridge to the beach, etc.

AND WE HAVE JUST BEGUN!!

New Destinations Coming this Summer

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, United Airlines will offer expanded service at PNS with non-stop flights to Cleveland (CLE), Milwaukee (MKE), Cincinnati (CVG), and Pittsburgh (PIT).  These four new destinations open up more opportunity for travelers and the Pensacola community to travel and grow. Ankit Gupta, vice president of United’s domestic network planning and scheduling, said bookings have been gaining steam. Earlier in the pandemic, “People just didn’t feel comfortable buying three months out,” Mr. Gupta said. Now more customers are starting to make summer plans, he said. “We’re seeing higher bookings farther out.”

Pensacola International Airport will welcome Spirit Airlines starting June 10th with service to seven destinations. Spirit will offer the only nonstop flights to Columbus (CMH), Indianapolis (IND) and Louisville (SDF), along with nonstop service Austin (AUS), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Kansas City (MCI) and St. Louis (STL). LEARN MORE

This increase in service will offer our area a unique opportunity to reach many parts of the nation with direct flights, less expensive air fare, and the ability to introduce more travelers to our piece of paradise!

what can you expect at PNS

Air travel has certainly changed over the last year, but we remain committed to provide the best air travel experience on the Gulf Coast.  Florida has been and continues to be a hotspot for travel and vacation. The airport, airlines, and our partners have taken this very seriously and are making sure we provide a safe, healthy, and easy flying experience.

Previously, the CDC, and many other entities, have recommended travel only if it was essential. But now that many are getting the vaccine and states are opening back up, the CDC has altered its direction. IN April of 2021, the CDC says that fully vaccinated travelers are less likely to get and spread COVID-19. People who are fully vaccinated can travel safely within the United States. Another change to the CDC’s recommendations is that fully vaccinated travelers do not need to get tested before or after travel nor do they need to self-quarantine unless their destination requires it.

Another update for the airport is in regard to masks. On April 22, the City Ordinance requiring masks was not renewed. However, the Federal Law requiring masks at airports, buses, taxis, ridesharing, etc is still in effect. Click here to read the CDC Order.  This mask order is being enfored by DHS and TSA through their Security Directive 1582/84-21-01. (read more here)

So what does all this mean? Simply, everyone must wear a mask while at the airport. This includes passengers, guests, and staff. Those who do not wear a mask will not be allowed to go through TSA Checkpoint or board their flight. Also, those who refuse to wear a mask will be asked to leave the airport.

WE ARE READY WHEN YOU ARE

We know it has been a while for most people and that comfort levels are different for everyone. We get it. Whatever your comfort level – rest assured that we are clean, safe, and ready for you. Find what you’ve been missing. Find your happy place. Fly at ease! Book a flight today to one of our great destinations. Or if you are from out of the Pensacola area, come see what makes Pensacola one of the best places to visit, live and do business! We guarantee you won’t be sorry you came.
